 Shame on you, PL [LTE]

Times-Standard Letter to the Editor

Editor,

The resounding defeat of Maxxam Corporation and Pacific Lumber's attempt to recall our District Attorney is a stunning repudiation of the heavy-handed tactics of that company. An overwhelming majority of Humboldt's voters rejected the lies and innuendo showered upon us by Pacific Lumber's slick consultants and pollsters.

It was inspiring to see the diverse citizenry that came together to fight this blatant power-grab. A heart-felt thank-you to everyone who donated time and money to this effort.

And to Pacific Lumber and Maxxam: Shame on you. Your arrogant, baseless, inappropriate recall attempt has cost this county hundred of thousands of dollars, both the direct costs to county government as well as the money the public had to spend to counter your manipulative tactics. That time, money and energy would have been better spent on some activity that moved Humboldt forward.

The various police associations that lent their names and reputations to the recall efforts didn't do themselves any favors either. Backing a campaign built entirely on innuendo and deception suggests that the cops are in the pocket of special interests. To repair their stained reputation, our cops are going to have to work hard to prove that they are not opposed to "Justice for All."

Yours truly,

Paul Mason
Garberville
