Pacific Lumber Co.’s Actions Are Shameful [Eureka Reporter Editorial]

February 13, 2004

It is unbelievable that The Pacific Lumber Co. expects Humboldt County voters to believe that its self-expressed “concern” about crime in Humboldt County motivated it to financially back the effort to recall District Attorney Paul Gallegos.

Under Robert Manne's “leadership,” PALCO has separated people more – not brought them closer. One only has to look at the infamous letters that he has sent to employees regarding the recall.

Humboldt County has a costly recall because of PL, which seems to have really got itself in to yet another predicament, another misstep, where cleanup becomes an us-versus-them battle once again, pitting Humboldt County businesses, residents, friends and families against each other.

PALCO is shameful in its pathetic attempt to say it supports the recall because of Gallegos' record on criminal prosecutions.

Since he took office more than a year ago, Gallegos has cracked down on the perpetrators of violence in our community, and that includes those who violently assault the elderly, women and children.

Gallegos recognizes that violent behaviors in adulthood have their roots in abusive childhoods, and that is why he places an emphasis on addressing domestic violence.

Additionally, as a father of three young children, preventing violence against children is his highest priority.

He has blossomed in his role as district attorney, winning all five cases he prosecuted during his first year in office.

Gallegos has increased felony and misdemeanor filings, which mean more people are being brought to justice under his department when compared to that of former District Attorney Terry Farmer.

He has made the District Attorney's Office more efficient. In fact, he took over an antiquated office that actually had critical case-management files that were still being kept on 3x5 index cards.

As a result, Gallegos is implementing a computerized database to track cases. Over time, this system will allow the public to determine what types of crime affect different areas in the county.

It will also allow objective and empirical assessment of success rates of the District Attorney's Office as well as law-enforcement agencies.

Despite these and other accomplishments, Pacific Lumber and its supporters want Gallegos recalled – despite the fact that the DA's personnel are essentially the same as those left behind by Farmer.

It's an insult to the professionals in the DA's office to say that it is now soft on crime – apparently, PALCO was able to arrive at this “assessment” after Gallegos had been in office only three months.

PALCO and its supporters should be ashamed.
