 | PL's Mud-Slinging Will Be Remembered For Many Years [Eureka Reporter] |
February 3, 2004
The majority of Humboldt County voters voiced their opinions on Tuesday and retained Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos.
Although The Eureka Reporter feels it is time for Humboldt County residents, businesses, families, friends and others to come together, we would be living in an Alice-in-Wonderland world to believe that this will actually occur at this time.
Only time will heal.
It would be nice if all of us could reconcile and forget this divisive, ugly, mud-slinging campaign on the part of The Pacific Lumber Co. and its minions who engaged in such a morally bankrupt campaign.
Many longtime county residents wonder if this was the dirtiest political campaign ever waged in the county.
PALCO/MAXXAM was so desperate that it went so far as to hire a public-relations hack who disseminated misinformation to at least this newspaper (which we did not fall for). The sooner Rob Flanigan leaves Humboldt County, the better for all of us.
PL believes it did what was right, but what its president, Robert Manne, its top managers and its MAXXAM handlers do not realize is that PL has lost the support of many longtime PL supporters. There are many of us who once supported PL who now look at it with disdain and sadness.
Disdain for the way it waged this ugly campaign; sadness that such a potentially wonderful Humboldt County employer has had to resort to such means to attempt to oust a district attorney who alleges the company has committed fraud and has filed a lawsuit to prove that allegation.
Why not win in court, like the rest of us would have to do? The lawsuit against Pacific Lumber should be settled in court.
PALCO may feel it invested in a good cause, but its investment will not pay it any dividends in terms of public support. It has lost a great deal of good will in this county because people realize that a corporation has attempted to influence the political process in an outrageous attempt to buy a new district attorney.
