VICTORY! Thank you for your support!

DEMOCRACY ROCKS ON!

We won. Thank you all. THIS DECISIVE VICTORY BELONGS TO YOU. It was won by the people for the people. A big thanks to...

...the HUNDREDS of volunteers who made phone calls and knocked on doors.

...the paid and volunteer campaign staff who built the Get Out the Vote operation, created the ads, generated the press, and raised the money.

...all 2,500 of our donors. Ordinary middle class folks dug deep and gave $100, $500 - even $5,000 for this effort. It was money and time well spent.

Paul Gallegos stood up to a giant. When the giant attacked him, we stood by his side and said NO. The community belongs to all of us. The DA can't be bought.

 Slam-dunk [North Coast Journal Editorial]

by Keith Easthouse

March 4, 2004

Who would'a thunk it?

Paul Gallegos didn't just survive. He kicked butt.

In a stunning vindication for the district attorney, and a humiliating defeat for his opponents, 61 percent of voters rejected the recall. Only 39 percent voted for it. Making the victory even more emphatic, a whopping 63 percent of registered voters -- about 50,000 people -- went to the polls. That compares to 33,000 who voted in the contest two years ago between Gallegos and Terry Farmer.

Gallegos won then by a 52 to 48 percent margin -- hardly a mandate. He's got a mandate now.

Jubilation at the brewery [North Coast Journal]

Hundreds celebrate the DA's easy victory

by HANK SIMS

March 4, 2004

A campaign volunteer's wolf whistle silenced the crowd shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday night. After quiet descended, Steve Schectman started pounding the balustrade upstairs at the Lost Coast Brewery, and suddenly it was official: DA Paul Gallegos had defeated the recall, and defeated it badly.

The hundreds of Gallegos supporters who had packed the brewery erupted in a deafening cheer as Gallegos gave a short speech thanking the people who had volunteered to work to defeat the effort to remove him from office.

"What we learned here, I hope, is if we work and sacrifice for democracy, it will work and sacrifice for us," Gallegos said.

PL's Mud-Slinging Will Be Remembered For Many Years [Eureka Reporter]

February 3, 2004

The majority of Humboldt County voters voiced their opinions on Tuesday and retained Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos.

Although The Eureka Reporter feels it is time for Humboldt County residents, businesses, families, friends and others to come together, we would be living in an Alice-in-Wonderland world to believe that this will actually occur at this time.

Only time will heal.

Gallegos Celebrates With Hundreds [Eureka Reporter]

March 3, 2004

by Christine Bensen, The Eureka Reporter

District Attorney Paul Gallegos was met with cheers from hundreds as he walked through the door at Lost Coast Brewery in Eureka around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

As he stopped to shake hands with his numerous supporters, Gallegos said he had one thing on his mind, his wife Joan, also an area attorney and the mother of his three children.

All smiles, Gallegos relaxed after exchanging a hug and kiss with his wife. As results came in the brewery erupted with more cheers.

Measure F — the measure on the Humboldt County ballot to recall the district attorney — was defeated 61.21 percent to 38.79 percent.

 DA recall fails [Times-Standard]

By James Tressler The Times-Standard

Wednesday, March 03, 2004 -

EUREKA -- District Attorney Paul Gallegos successfully fought off a recall in Tuesday's election, ending one of the most controversial and divisive chapters in Humboldt County history.

Voters decisively rejected the recall by 61 percent to 39 percent, out of 50,498 votes cast.

Gallegos, surrounded by his wife, Joan, and legions of supporters who crowded into the Lost Coast Brewery, broke into a relieved smile as the results came in.

"It's time to put aside our petty quarrels and do what's right for the people of Humboldt County," Gallegos said. "Hopefully this election sends a message ... that at least in Humboldt County, we own our government."

 Shame on you, PL [LTE]

Times-Standard Letter to the Editor

Editor,

The resounding defeat of Maxxam Corporation and Pacific Lumber's attempt to recall our District Attorney is a stunning repudiation of the heavy-handed tactics of that company. An overwhelming majority of Humboldt's voters rejected the lies and innuendo showered upon us by Pacific Lumber's slick consultants and pollsters.

It was inspiring to see the diverse citizenry that came together to fight this blatant power-grab. A heart-felt thank-you to everyone who donated time and money to this effort.

And to Pacific Lumber and Maxxam: Shame on you. Your arrogant, baseless, inappropriate recall attempt has cost this county hundred of thousands of dollars, both the direct costs to county government as well as the money the public had to spend to counter your manipulative tactics. That time, money and energy would have been better spent on some activity that moved Humboldt forward.

Voters Reject Attempt to Recall North Coast D.A. [L.A. Times]

A timber company bankrolled the effort to remove the Humboldt County official

By Kenneth R. Weiss, Times Staff Writer

March 3, 2004

Humboldt County voters rallied behind their district attorney Tuesday, rejecting a campaign bankrolled by Pacific Lumber Co. to recall the prosecutor who had accused the powerful timber company of fraud.

With all precincts reporting, voters decided to retain Dist. Atty. Paul Gallegos, 61% to 39%, despite an intensive campaign of radio, television and direct mail advertisements that portrayed Gallegos as soft on crime and a friend of illegal tree-sitters, rapists and pot growers.

"It's a triumph of the people over the influence of money and lies in politics," said a jubilant Gallegos, 41, a former Southern Californian who moved to Eureka a decade ago. "This recall election wasn't about me, it's about a corporation trying to control politics here in Humboldt County."

 N. Calif. DA survives recall election [AP]

March 3, 2004

EUREKA, Calif. -- A prosecutor in California redwood country easily survived a recall election Tuesday that was largely funded by a lumber company he sued.

With all precincts reporting, 61 percent of voters decided to keep Humboldt County District Attorney Paul V. Gallegos.

The Pacific Lumber Co., through its corporate parent Maxxam Inc. of Houston, contributed $229,000 to the recall effort.

Voters to decide Gallegos' fate today [Times-Standard]

By James Tressler, The Times-Standard

March 02, 2004

EUREKA -- A historic chapter in Humboldt County politics finally closes today, when voters head to the polls to decide whether District Attorney Paul Gallegos should be recalled.

Monday provided a fitting end to the yearlong campaign. Gallegos hit the streets during his lunch hour, strolling through Old Town and shaking hands.

"I feel very positive, I'm looking forward to (the election)," Gallegos said. "Now I'm just trying to get people out to vote."
